When you need a filling
- a cavity – a dark spot, a hole, or sensitivity to sweet and cold;
- a chipped corner or a crack;
- an old filling has crumbled, discoloured, or has new decay underneath;
- the neck of the tooth is exposed and worn (an abfraction lesion);
- you dislike the shape or colour of a front tooth – aesthetic composite restoration.
If the tooth aches at night or reacts to heat for more than a few seconds, the inflammation may have reached the nerve and you may need root canal treatment rather than just a filling; the dentist decides after an X-ray.
How a filling is done
One visit, 45–60 minutes.
- Examination and X-ray (10–15 EUR) if the depth of decay is not visible.
- Anaesthesia (10 EUR) – no pain during the procedure. Shallow lesions can often be done without it.
- Removal of decayed tissue down to healthy dentine; the cavity is disinfected.
- Isolation with a dental dam or cotton rolls – composite only bonds to a dry surface.
- Layered build-up. Composite is placed in 2 mm layers, each cured with the blue light, so the filling is dense and does not shrink.
- Shaping, bite adjustment, polishing. A smooth filling does not collect plaque or stain.
Materials
Light-cured composite is the standard choice: matched to the tooth shade, cured with a lamp, lasts 7–10 years. Aesthetic restoration of front teeth uses the same composite in several shades with translucent layers to rebuild the anatomy and edges; it takes longer, hence 110–150 EUR. Glass ionomer releases fluoride and suits milk teeth and fillings at the gum line. Amalgam (grey metal fillings) is no longer used. If more than half the tooth is gone, a filling will not hold and the dentist will suggest an inlay or a crown.
Types of fillings: white composite or something else?
Laurus Dent plus places light-cured tooth-coloured composite fillings (90–130 EUR), suitable for front and chewing teeth and invisible in a smile. We do not use amalgam. If the cavity is large and there is little tooth left to hold a filling, we suggest an inlay or a crown, which lasts longer.
Temporary fillings
A temporary filling is placed between visits, for example during root canal treatment or when we wait to see how a tooth settles. It lasts from a few days to 2–3 weeks; it is softer and wears, so do not chew hard food on it and keep your appointment. It is included in the treatment price.
Aesthetic tooth restoration
If a front tooth is chipped, worn, gapped or uneven in colour, we rebuild its shape and shade with composite in one visit, 110–150 EUR per tooth. The material is layered and polished to look natural; it lasts 5–8 years and can be refreshed.

Aftercare
You can eat once the anaesthesia wears off (1–2 hours); light-cured composite is fully set immediately. Mild sensitivity to cold for a week is normal. If the filling feels "high" when you bite, come in for a five-minute adjustment. The filling margin is where new decay starts: brush twice a day, floss, hygiene visit every six months.
