Stages of decay and how each is treated

How cavity treatment works
- Examination and X-ray. We check all teeth, not just the one that bothers you – decay rarely comes alone.
- Anaesthesia (10 EUR). For shallow lesions you may choose to skip it.
- Removal of decayed tissue down to healthy dentine, with a drill or, for shallow lesions, hand instruments.
- Filling in layers with tooth-coloured light-cured composite (details: tooth fillings).
- Polishing and bite check.
One tooth takes 45–60 minutes. Several neighbouring teeth are often treated in one visit.
Decay in children
Milk teeth need treating even though they will fall out: untreated decay hurts, interferes with eating, and infects the permanent tooth growing underneath. A milk-tooth filling costs 50–60 EUR, children's hygiene 40–55 EUR. At the first visit the child just gets to know the room and the dentist; we treat at the second. More: children's dentistry.
Bottle decay and decay in milk teeth
Bottle decay affects toddlers who fall asleep with a bottle or drink sweet drinks often: the front milk teeth develop white spots, then turn brown and crumble. Milk teeth need treating because they hold space for the permanent teeth and decay reaches the nerve fast. A filling in a milk tooth costs 50–60 EUR, children's hygiene 40–55 EUR. - brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, floss in the evening;
- sweets and sugary drinks with meals, not throughout the day (frequency matters more than amount);
- professional hygiene every six months – the hygienist spots decay while it is still a spot;
- a check-up with X-rays every 1–2 years – decay between teeth cannot be seen.
