Who a removable denture suits
- several teeth are missing on one or both sides and there is nothing to support a bridge;
- all teeth are missing (full denture);
- implants are not an option for health, bone or budget reasons;
- you need a temporary solution while bone heals after extractions or implant surgery.
Types of removable dentures
Acrylic plate (conventional denture)
A hard plastic base with artificial teeth; a partial version clips onto your own teeth with metal clasps. The least expensive type. Downside: the base is relatively bulky and takes longer to get used to.
Flexible (nylon) dentures
A thin, flexible base that does not break when dropped; the clasps are made of the same translucent material and are invisible. More comfortable for partial gaps. Downside: not suitable for every bite.
Soft-lined (silicone) dentures
An acrylic denture with a soft, elastic inner layer that cushions the gums. The choice for thin, sensitive gums and for anyone a hard plate rubs. The soft layer wears over time; the denture is then replaced.
Cast partial denture
A partial denture on a thin metal framework that rests on your own teeth with precision clasps or attachments. More stable and slimmer than an acrylic plate and covers less of the palate. Suitable when your remaining teeth are sound.
Full denture
Replaces all upper or lower teeth and stays in place by suction and a precise fit. Upper dentures hold better than lower ones. If you want it not to move at all, a full denture can be anchored on 2–4 implants.

How a denture is made
- Consultation and X-ray. The dentist assesses your remaining teeth, gums and bone, recommends a denture type and gives the price. Any extractions or treatment come first.
- Impressions. Preliminary impressions, then precise ones; the laboratory builds the model from them.
- Bite registration and tooth selection. Tooth shade and shape are chosen and the jaw relationship recorded.
- Wax try-in. We check appearance and bite while changes are still easy.
- Finished denture. After 7–14 days at the laboratory the denture is fitted and the clasps and edges adjusted.
- Follow-up. One or two weeks later we ease any spots that rub. This is normal and included in the price.
Getting used to it and daily care
The first 2–4 weeks. More saliva, some difficulty speaking and a foreign-body feeling are normal and pass. Start with soft food cut small and chew on both sides. Reading aloud speeds up speech adaptation.
Every day. Remove and rinse the denture after meals; in the evening clean it with a soft denture brush and a denture cleaner (not toothpaste, which scratches). Take it out at night and keep it in water or cleaning solution: your gums need the rest and it lowers the risk of inflammation and fungal infection. Brush your own teeth and gums as usual.
Every 6 months. A check-up and hygiene visit: the dentist checks the fit and removes tartar from the denture and your own teeth.
